Prayer for 12 March

Echoing a suggestion made by a youth from Haiti, the Taizé Community invites everyone who is able to pray for the people of Haiti, either singly or in a group, the 12th of each month for 12 months following the earthquake of January 12.

At the beginning of each month, we will publish on this page a proposed prayer that can be used that day.

Visiting Haïti in 1983, Brother Roger stayed at Cité-Soleil,
a slum in Port-au-Prince.

Proposed prayer – March 12, 2010

N.B. This prayer does not have any Alleluias because it is the Lenten season.

Song: Jésus le Christ

Psalm

Bonum est confidere (1x after each verse)

Put your hope in the Lord,
both now and evermore.

Lord, my heart is not proud,
nor haughty my eyes;
I am not intent on great things
or achievements sublime.

No, my soul lies at rest,
as quiet as a child;
my soul is as still as a babe
at its mother’s breast.

From Psalm 131

Reading

If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is glorified, all the members share its joy. Now you are the Body of Christ and each of you is a member of it.

Prayer

God our hope, we entrust to you all the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. When we are dismayed by the incomprehensible suffering of the innocent, enable us to be witnesses to compassion

Songs:
C’est toi ma lampe
Ad te Jesu Christe
Jesus, remember me
Dona la pace Signore

After one of the songs at the end of the prayer, this excerpt from a message received can be read.

"I have never seen such fervor before. In all the churches and street corners in Haiti you could see large crowds praying, singing the Lord’s praises. It is as if Christ were there, present, to heal Haiti. Your prayer is the best thing that you can offer the Haitian people at present." (Jean-Paul, from Haiti)
