Were it possible to fathom a human heart, the surprising thing would be to discover there the silent longing for a presence. In John’s Gospel, there appears a response to this longing: “Someone you do not know is among you.” (6) Is he not always in our midst, this Christ with whom we may be almost unacquainted?
