Prayer & Reflection

How can we deepen our faith and our understanding of the Bible in every day life?

This section of the web site contains the “Letter for the year” by Brother Matthew, the short Bible text read each day during the mid day prayer at Taizé, and a short meditation for each day. Every month, a Bible text accompanied by a short commentary and questions is proposed for reflection, either personal or in a group.

Matthew 16:13-16

Jesus asked his disciples: “Who do people say I am?” “Some say John the Baptist,” they answered, “some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But you,” he said, “who do you say I am?” Peter spoke up and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Daily prayers

by brother Matthew
Christ Jesus, on the eve of your arrest, you eagerly desired to share the festive meal with your friends. You behaved humbly among them like someone who serves. In your footsteps, we would like to be at the service of the people you entrust to us, here and far away. And so may our festival have no end!

God, you who love us, we seek always to discern what you expect of us. You have a call for every person, without exception. And if we no longer know how to hear what you want to say to us, show us someone who can listen to us unselfishly and helps us to find the way of freedom which you open up for us, until the day when we can say to you: "Speak, your servant is listening."
Saturday, August 22, 2026
Christ Jesus, when you ask us, "For you, who am I?" we would like to rely on the trust of all those who have followed you, from the time of Peter and your first companions. You never sought titles or grand positions, but you incarnated the love of God in all its humble fullness. And so we will dare to reply to your question: "You are the Son of the Living God." Make of us living stones in the mystery of communion which is your Body, the Church; make us a leaven of trust in the human family.

Letter 2026

What are you seeking?

Brother Matthew

So many people are looking for meaning in their lives. They are searching for something greater than the easy promises that fill our screens so much of the time. Are humans not created for a real purpose? What can enable us to discover this?

Preparing a time of prayer

How can we keep on praying together? People often ask this question after a stay in Taizé, or else after taking part in one of the meetings outside of Taizé. The “songs of Taizé” published in different languages are simple, but preparation is required to use them in prayer. This preparation should take place before the prayer itself, so that once it begins the atmosphere remains meditative. During the prayer it is better if no one directs the music; in this way everyone can face the cross, the

Icons in worship

Icons contribute to the beauty of worship. They are like windows open on the realities of the Kingdom of God, making them present in our prayer on earth. Although icons are images, they are not simply illustrations or decorations. They are symbols of the incarnation, a presence which offers to the eyes the spiritual message that the Word addresses to the ears. According to the eighth-century theologian Saint John Damascene, icons are based on the coming of Christ to earth. Our salvation is linke

Preparing a space for a meditative prayer

When possible, it is preferable to meet in a church, making it beautiful and welcoming. The way the space is arranged is important for the quality of the prayer. Naturally it is not necessary to do a complete restoration of the church! Very simple means can be used to create a prayerful atmosphere. If it is not possible to meet in a church, it is important to make the prayer-space as harmonious as you can. It is preferable for all the participants to face the same direction during the prayer, as
