In the fourth century, Ambrose, bishop of Milan, was deeply concerned to see that some Christians were accumulating riches. He wrote to them, “The earth was created in common and for everyone. Nature knows no wealthy people. You are not taking what is yours and giving it to the poor; you are restoring to them a portion of what belongs to them.” (3)
