The brothers’ work

Books

Since the community’s beginnings, some of the brothers have sought to express in writing the call to which they have responded. Brother Roger published his first booklet in 1941, expressing his vision for the community as he saw it at the time. Since then, the brothers have continued to publish the fruits of their reflections. The community had its own printing press from 1958 to 2010; Les Presses de Taizé continues to publish books written by the brothers, but now the printing is done outside.

The layout of the books in French and many of the music books are done by brothers at Taizé; they are sold at the exhibition in Taizé and via the Taizé webshop, and are distributed in bookshops. Most of these books are also translated into other languages; these translations are published by various publishers in the countries concerned.

New Album: Dona Nobis Pacem

New album of songs from Taizé, recorded in the village church, featuring 17 songs, 8 of which have never been recorded before. Prayer, at the heart of the life in Taizé, is proposed to young people and to all those who come here as an important way for turning towards the sources of inner life and of faith. The songs on this new album Dona Nobis Pacem express the experience of prayer throughout the past ten years during these youth gatherings. They were recorded in July 2024 in the church of the village of Taizé, an 11th-century building that remains a place of meditation and prayer for today. The choir was composed of 25 young people from different countries, together with a group of professional musicians who are friends of the community.

It covers the final preparations and the opening of the “Council of Youth”, an attempt to take seriously the desire for renewal of church and society of the younger generations and to orient it in a positive direction. Brother Roger also speaks of the life of the community and its many visitors, his personal spiritual journey, and the trips he took to different parts of the world, notably, at the end of 1976, to a poor neighborhood of Calcutta with an intercontinental team of young people.

It covers the day-to-day life of the Taizé Community during this period and also describes the travels of Brother Roger, at the end of each year, with a team of young adults to places of poverty across the world – with boat-people on the South China Sea, with slum-dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya, and with indigenous Americans in the south of Chile. In addition, Brother Roger speaks of his encounters with significant people, including several popes and the secretary general of the United Nations.
