Prayer & Reflection

How can we deepen our faith and our understanding of the Bible in every day life?

This section of the web site contains the “Letter for the year” by Brother Matthew, the short Bible text read each day during the mid day prayer at Taizé, and a short meditation for each day. Every month, a Bible text accompanied by a short commentary and questions is proposed for reflection, either personal or in a group.

Daily prayers

by brother Matthew
Christ Jesus, your words enter into us and challenge us. But when you say: "Do not be afraid", our hearts are pacified and we begin to hear what you whisper in our ears. Putting your words into practice then becomes the way that you open for us. And by your Holy Spirit, these words will bear fruit in our lives, for the proclamation of the love that God bears towards every person, without exception.

Faithful God, like Abraham, we find that your word makes us set out on a journey. It brings us through the deserts of our heart. Leaving behind what we love is never easy, but when we do not know any more how to go forward, your word becomes a lamp on our path and it always gives light to us.
Monday, June 22, 2026
Eternal God, when we realize that we are far from you, we desire always to come back to you. But simply remembering your love helps us understand that it is you who bring us back. Even if we were to forsake you, you will never forsake us.

Letter 2026

What are you seeking?

Brother Matthew

So many people are looking for meaning in their lives. They are searching for something greater than the easy promises that fill our screens so much of the time. Are humans not created for a real purpose? What can enable us to discover this?

Preparing a time of prayer

How can we keep on praying together? People often ask this question after a stay in Taizé, or else after taking part in one of the meetings outside of Taizé. The “songs of Taizé” published in different languages are simple, but preparation is required to use them in prayer. This preparation should take place before the prayer itself, so that once it begins the atmosphere remains meditative. During the prayer it is better if no one directs the music; in this way everyone can face the cross, the

Icons in worship

Icons contribute to the beauty of worship. They are like windows open on the realities of the Kingdom of God, making them present in our prayer on earth. Although icons are images, they are not simply illustrations or decorations. They are symbols of the incarnation, a presence which offers to the eyes the spiritual message that the Word addresses to the ears. According to the eighth-century theologian Saint John Damascene, icons are based on the coming of Christ to earth. Our salvation is linke

Preparing a space for a meditative prayer

When possible, it is preferable to meet in a church, making it beautiful and welcoming. The way the space is arranged is important for the quality of the prayer. Naturally it is not necessary to do a complete restoration of the church! Very simple means can be used to create a prayerful atmosphere. If it is not possible to meet in a church, it is important to make the prayer-space as harmonious as you can. It is preferable for all the participants to face the same direction during the prayer, as
