Writing/Translating the News by email

From now on we shall be preparing the email newsletters on the website —this makes it easier to send out an HTML formatted version.

Writing or translating

Please write/translate the «News» in the appropriate sub-section for your language. Click here to go to the container section. Do not overwrite the previous News article, but create a new one, linking it to the correct English or French article as a translation as explained on the page “Translating an article”.

Please type the different parts of the News in these boxes:

{{{Easter at Taizé: "We are not alone in celebrating the resurrection of Christ"}}}

The same date for Easter for all the Christians in the world: this communion with the universal Church was quite tangible in the Church of Reconciliation on Easter ...etc.

In the text of the News, use the same formatting shortcuts as for other pages on the Taizé website. But only use simple formats:

- Start each section of the News with a heading {{{First Heading}}}
- Make new paragraphs by entering a empty line.
- Make new lines by placing an underscore
_ followed by a space at the beginning of a line. Use this sparingly!
- Ctrl+B {{Bold text}}
- Ctrl+I {Italic text}
- Lists can be made with

- And numbered lists with

N.B. For both kinds of list, please make sure to leave an empty line between the list and any other text — both above and below. But do not leave any empty lines within the list itself.

- For links to web pages please use this notation [->http://www.taize.fr/en_article10052.html] or, perhaps better, mask the address of the link by writing text before the arrow: [The cup of patience->http://www.taize.fr/en_article10031.html] or [Read article->http://www.taize.fr/en_article10031.html, etc.
Note: Contrary to the correct practice for putting links on the Taizé website when you should never include the site itself (www.taize.fr), when writing links for the «News» which will be sent out by email it is necessary to include the full reference.

- Email links
Avoid putting email links (certainly personal email addresses) as much as possible.
If you do put an email address, then in order to prevent it being scrambled by the antispam system you need to write the address in plain text, replacing @ by [at]with no spaces.
So write, for example: The Kitchen: kitchen[at]taize.fr or just kitchen[at]taize.fr
Never use the usual SPIP notation ([The Kitchen->[email protected]]) for the News.

RSS feed

The most obvious way to receive the text of the News to translate as soon as it is ready is of course to subscribe to the News (in English or in French) yourself!

From now on the News will also be available by RSS feed. The addresses for the feeds are:
http://www.taize.fr/newsrss.xml or http://www.taize.fr/newsrss.xml?lang=en : English
http://www.taize.fr/newsrss.xml?lang=fr : French
etc.

If you are involved in translating the News, you may like to subscribe to the RSS feed(s) which interest you, using a news reader which will give you the whole document. The following have been checked to work: Google News Reader, “Sage” for Firefox. The Thunderbird 3 Newsreader does not seem reliable at present.

Sending the News

- When the translator has finished his or her work, they should set the status of the article to «submitted for evaluation». If someone else needs to check/re-read the news, contact them to let them know.

- When the person responsible for the News in that language (who may or may not be the same person!) is satisfied that all is ready then he/she, should set the status to «published online». That is the signal to the brother who sends out the News that he can send that language.
