New lines and paragraphs

Paragraphs

To create paragraphs, you simply leave a blank line, a bit like separating paragraphs in a e-mail.

Note: Most word-processors (e.g. Word) do not have a blank line between paragraphs. This means when you copy and paste text to the website from your word-processor, you will often need to go through the text to insert empty lines between paragraphs.

You can leave several consecutive blank lines without any effect on the layout.

New lines

Usually it is better to separate blocks of text with paragraphs.

A new line does not add any vertical space between lines of text (as a paragraph does). It is useful for lists like this:

8:30 Morning prayer, then breakfast
10:15 Bible introduction
11:00 Small groups
12:20 Midday prayer, then lunch
14:00 Song-practice

This list is written like this:

You make a new line by pressing Enter then an underscore ( _ ), followed by a space.
(Note: the underscore was needed in previous versions of the Spip programme. In the version being used in 2023, it is sufficient just to make a new line in the editing window.)

Lists with bullets

Another way of making a break in text is to use a “bullet”. You do this by pressing Enter and then beginning the new line with a simple dash, followed by a space.

For example,

will give this:

- 8:30 Morning prayer, then breakfast
- 10:15 Bible introduction
- 11:00 Small groups
- 12:20 Midday prayer, then lunch
- 14:00 Song-practice

but the actual type of bullet used depends on the formatting of the site. Currently, the Taizé site uses a small orange rectangle.

It is also possible to make numbered or nested lists. See the programme’s online help for this.

Horizontal lines

The Spip shortcut for creating a horizontal line separator is simply four dashes on new line by themselves. So,

----

creates a line like this:

(On our website the horizontal line is currently formatted to be half the width of the page and a deep red colour.)
