Giving, praying, fasting
Matthew 6:1-6,16-18And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
(…) “When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
What counts when we do something good is the generosity with which we act: a free giving which echoes the way in which God gives to us. Trying to show our generosity to others merely exposes it as unreal. (Jesus does, however, encourage us to let ourselves be edified by the generosity we notice in others. See Mark 12:41-44)
Jesus even tells us to hide our own generosity from our own selves: “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”. Certainly, we should not keep any record of what we give, as this can lead us to expect repayment. But these words lead us deeper still: as we decide to act generously, we must not let ourselves become caught in thoughts such as “What good will my action do? – it is only a drop in the ocean! What will it change? If only others did as much...”
No – nothing that is done with true generosity, that is to say, out of love, is ever lost. It becomes part of a hidden, secret stream which is the life of the resurrection. Jesus tells us, three times over, that our Father’s gaze is fixed upon this stream.
